Miron Izakson

Miron C. Izakson was born in Haifa in November 1956. He is a fourth-generation Israeli. His grandfather, the late Dr. Aharon Meir Mazia, who made aliyah to Israel in 1888, was one of the country’s first doctors and served as chairman of the Language Committee after Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. Miron’s father, the late Eliyahu Izason, served notably as president of the Israel Farmers’ Association, and his mother, the late Ruth, served notably as president of the World WIZO Federation. Miron holds degrees in law and Jewish philosophy and teaches literature at Bar-Ilan University. He began writing poetry and prose in his youth, and to date, 22 of his books have been published in Israel, along with 6 CDs of his poems set to music. His books have also been published in France, the United States, China, Russia, Spain, and Norway. Among other honors, he has won the President’s Prize for Literature and the Brenner Prize for Poetry. Miron is active in public affairs, particularly on issues related to relations between religious and secular communities, and his articles are regularly published in the country’s leading newspapers. Miron participates in numerous cultural and literary initiatives; notably, he is a member of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, a member of the board of directors of “Yad Vashem” for Holocaust Remembrance, and a member of the Press Council. He chairs the committee for the First Lady’s Poetry Prize and served as a member and then chair of the Israel Prize Committee for Literature. Numerous essays have been written about his work, notably by the late author Aaron Appelfeld and Professor Dan Miron. His wife, Ofra, passed away about three years ago; they had seven children.
